The first time I was asked to be a bridesmaid, I wrapped my arms around the bride shook her back and forth with excitement and squealed, Yes, of course! But on the car ride home from that magical moment, I realized I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Right before I left to be a Professional Bridesmaid for a wedding in Minnesota, I put together a bridesmaid survival kit. I loaded up a hand-held cart at CVS with handfuls of bridesmaid essentials – enough stuff that the lady behind the check out counter asked me if was donating supplies to a village in a small African country.
There’s a place deep in my closet – behind the Forever 21 cotton sundresses that have been washed and worn so many times that they look like old dust rages – behind the professional office attire I bought at Anne Taylor Loft for my first job and only wore once (because I realized, soon after, that wearing jeans to work was more acceptable than wearing an A-line wool skirt).
Can I get an amen? Amen. I always cringe a little when I’m invited to a wedding and the invitation isn’t addressed to Ms. Jen Glantz and Guest. By now, I’m usually one of the only single gals there, and while that comes with some perks: catching the bouquet without competition, dibs on which weird uncle to dance with, and not having to worry about taking care of a drunk date, it also kind of stinks.

After you’ve bought the dress and helped the bride conquer her 7 page to-do list, you may find one more task on your list of maid-of-honor duties that’s making you flutter with nerves: giving a speech at the wedding.
