8 Ways to Deal With a Momzilla

March 7, 2016

When you’re in wedding planning mode, you may ask for help from your mom. Or, your mom may jump in and give you all kinds of help you never asked for in the first place. Either way, planning a wedding side-by-side with your mom can be a really fun experience, but it can also be a little rocky, especially if your mom starts to turn into a little bit of a Momzilla. Here are 8 ways to handle your mom, if that begins to happen, so that your relationship isn’t pulled apart by your wedding.

  1. Give Her Some Space

The best thing you can do when you feel like your mom is transforming into a Momzilla is to give her some space. Don’t try to argue with her or turn the tense conversation into ones that screams anger. When the conversation spins out of control, take a step back.

  1. Let Her Know What You’d Like Her Help With

If your mom is making you feel a bit overwhelmed, it’s because she wants to help you out. Look over your to-do list and give her some tasks that she can take on and do for you. Or ask her to choose things she wants to do.

  1. Keep Communicating

Even if your conversations with your mom get you all riled up, try to keep communicating with her. Even if it’s through text or email, it’s better than ignoring her altogether. In the end, that may make the situation a bit worse.

  1. Let Her Know When You Get Stressed

If you’re starting to feel stressed or finding yourself on the verge of mid-day anxiety attacks, let your mom know that you are feeling this way. Instead of saying, “Mom, you are stressing me out.” Be more specific. Let her know what actions make you feel on the edge.

  1. Remind Her That It’s Your Big Day

If your mom is beginning to pick vendors and make plans for your wedding that don’t feel like you or are not what you want, it’s important to remind her that this your big day and your once in a lifetime party.

  1. Remember It’s Okay to Say NO

If something bugs you about a centerpiece design or a vendor that your mom picked out for you, remember that it is okay to say no.

  1. Have a Heart to Heart

In the end, she is your mom. Don’t let the chaos of wedding shake up your relationship. When things get heated or stressful take a step back and just have a conversation with her letting her know what is making you feel this way.
