The 2016 Wedding Dress Trends You Never Would Have Predicted

Brides-to-be are starting to be bolder and more daring when it comes to sticking their tongues out at standard and old school wedding traditions. They are saying no to customs that make no sense in the modern day and age, like throwing the bouquet or having guests throw rice at their face. They are saying yes to things their grandparents would have rolled their eyes at, like doing a pre-ceremony first-look or broadcasting their wedding, real-time, with social media.

But one punch in the wedding tradition gut that more and more brides are hugging hello is the act of picking a wedding dress that vibrates to the beat of their own personal style and flair, saying adios to the traditional wedding dress and instead, picking out an outfit that will truly be a head turner.

The 2016 wedding dress trends are proof of that. Ready to see what’s new and bold this year before it’s seen on aisles everywhere? Here are the top 5 wedding dress trends you never would have predicted.

  1. Showing Skin

We’re starting to say bye, bye to the traditional wedding dress that covers the bride, from head-to-toe, with as much fabric as possible. Brides are opting out of picking dresses that make them sweaty and opting in to dresses that show off their bodies, their curves, and their personality. This always means they are saying hello to showing more skin. Open-back dresses, front cut outs, and even lace crop tops that look like they could also belong at Coachella 2016 are showing up as this year’s dress trends.

  1. Underwear as Bridal Wear

The trend of wearing dresses that look like they could double as sexy lingerie has been something showing up at nightclubs and fancy dinner parties for years. But it’s slowly becoming a popular wedding dress trend. Brides are not trying to be bare-skinned and sex-appealed out like they are Victoria Secret models, but they are wearing more dresses that look like slips or designing the top of their dresses to look like classy and wedding appropriate bustier.

  1. Getting Low

While turtleneck necklines were never a style for wedding dresses, and fingers crossed it never becomes a style, quite the opposite look is pushing through this year – plunging necklines. But, it’s worth noting, this lower neckline doesn’t have to mean the larger the cleavage. This as low as you can go neckline look does a good job of making sure your lady lumps are stored away and hidden from your 100 plus wedding guests who came for a show, but not that kind of show.

  1. Color Me Crazy

Stark white wedding dresses have been fading out for some time. Last year, pink and blue dresses slapped us across the face and said, “It’s time to get colorful, baby girl.” This year, wedding dresses are going one more step in the “look at me” direction with patterns and even watercolor designs on them. Your dress no longer has to match the color of a tablecloth at a fancy Italian restaurant. It can look more like a painting you’d see at the Louvre.

  1. Anything But a Dress

Brides are starting to rebel against the flowy, fabric white dress and instead, wearing something they feel more comfortable in, something that looks and feels more like them. You can skip the dress and instead, go for a pant suit, a skirt and crop top, or even, for the thrill-seekers, a romper.
