If I had a quarter for every single time someone has said the phrase “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride” to me, well, maybe then I’d be able to ford a wedding. The phrase has stuck around from generation to generation and every young women who has found themselves walking down the aisle, again and again, without a plus one of their own, seems to hear this obnoxious tagline. So, next time that someone says it to you, here are 7 responses to send back to them.

  1. I have a lot of friends

If you’ve been a bridesmaid more times then you can count on your hands, the reason is that you have a lot of very close people in your life. That’s something to be wildly proud of.

  1. All of my friends got engaged

Perhaps the reason you’re known as “always a bridesmaid” is because all of your friend got engaged at a much younger age than you expected them too.

  1. Being a bridesmaid has its perks

The parties, the dress – the cute dresses, the overall experience. While it can be a lot of work, it’s not always that bad.

  1. Being a bridesmaid is cheaper than being a bride

Even if you’ve been a bridesmaid ten times, that’s still less expensive than throwing a wedding.

  1. Which way is the bar?

Change the subject as quick as you can and go grab yourself a glass of bubbly. You deserve it!

  1. So what my closet is filled with a lot of chiffon?

Your closet may look like the fabric section at Michael’s Craft store just threw up on it, but nobody needs to know that. Hide those dresses behind your winter coats or drop them off as a donation to a thrift store.

  1. My time will come…eventually.

Even if you don’t know when, that’s okay. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about being single or being a bridesmaid.
