Dear Jen,
I’m a guest at my new boyfriend’s brothers wedding and I’m very nervous. Not only am I meeting a couple of tables worth of family members i’ve never met before, I’m also going to be by the side of my boyfriend during many intimate wedding family moments.
Do you have any pointers or tips for me so that I don’t completely embarrass myself or make a terrible first impression?
Sincerely,
How Do I Plus “Won”
Dear “How Do I Plus Won?”,
Believe it or not, meeting your boyfriend’s family for the first time, at a wedding, is actually the perfect setting. Weddings are a time of enormous excitement and hours on the dance floor. For joyous celebration and a couple more glasses of champagne than you’d usually have (so be extra careful with those!)
Making a good, unforgettable first impression at a wedding is simple if you follow these few things:
1. Ask to help out if needed. If you see there’s things you can do to help (whether that’s helping with photos, or setting up decorations, or guiding guests onto the bus) offer to lend a hand.
2. Go easy on the drinks. Stay hydrated with water and as sober as possible. You want to be able to shake hands with new family members and have meaningful conversations with them.
3. Bring a gift with you. Even if that’s just a simple sweet card thanking the bride and groom for having you there.
Enjoy yourself at the wedding and remember that you can never go wrong by keeping the party going with some smooth moves on the dance floor!
