My Job Won’t Let Me Go to My Friend’s Wedding

When your best friend gets engaged, you may find yourself jumping for joy with endless excitement. You’ve probably had the marriage conversation with them many times before and now that it’s happening, you can’t start counting down the days until the wedding actually arrives.

But after you’ve found out the wedding day and you go to your boss to take off work in order to attend, what happens when they tell you that you can’t go? What happens when they tell you that you can’t take off a Friday or a Monday to go to the wedding?

The first thing you should do is have a sit-down meeting with your boss in person. Let them know how important this wedding is to you. Ask, if possible, you can work remotely for the day or pick up an extra shift next week to make up for the day you’re taking off to travel to attend the wedding. Try to bargain and negotiate with them.

If they are saying no, no, no, and won’t budge at all, see if you can perhaps find a way to travel to and from the wedding in just one day, so that you don’t have to take off a day before or a day after the wedding.

The best thing you can do is plan far ahead for the wedding. Ask to take off wok as soon as you know the wedding date. Waiting until the last minute, may make it almost impossible for your boss to say yes.

If you can’t take off and you’re stuck at work, as a friend who is going to the wedding to Skype you in, on mute, for the ceremony and even parts of the reception. That way, you can feel like you’re there, even though you won’t be.
