How to Handle Valentine’s Day if You’re Single and All Your Friends are Married

Valentine’s Day when you’re the single gal pal in your group of friends can feel entirely and completely miserable. It’s one thing to be always the bridesmaid and never the bride at the weddings you attend, where you practically catch the bouquet these days by just sticking your pinky up in the air, but it’s another to remind yourself just how single you really are by a chocolate-filled holiday that you can’t seem to escape.

The first thing you should do on the 14th of February is to go on a social media hiatus for the day. Nothing good will come from eyeing a newsfeed of photos of kissing couples and flowers that make desks and tables look like The Secret Garden. Going off the social grid for the day will help you avoid seeing things that will make you roll your eyes and feel even more of the single sadness syndrome.

The next thing you can do is plan a fun day for yourself. Call it Your Big Day Out and do three things for yourself that you wouldn’t normally do. Take yourself for a massage, to a concert, even a movie. Then go out to dinner and order dessert. If you can’t decide between the brownie sundae or the chocolate cake, order both. It’s Your day.

Remember that celebrating love, which is what Valentine’s Day should be about, is not just about celebrating romantic love. So don’t ignore the people, the family members, and the friends in your life that you adore. Make sure you send them something sweet or give them a hug. There is so much love around you, even if you are technically single.

Finally, remember that it’s just one day. Its’ just 24 hours where you remember that you haven’t found the person you’re going to be madly in love with for the rest of your life. By the day after, when the chocolate is on-sale and the candy is rotting, you’ll forget all about this day…until next year.
