If you’re worried that your guests will be starring down their phones the whole time they are at your wedding, whether it’s because they are Snapchatting or playing PokemonGo, you may want to make a rule that your wedding is social media free. If you’re wondering how to spread that message without making guests angry or upset, here are 6 polite ways to tell your guests to put their phone away at your wedding.

1. Make it Funny
Send out a GIF or a funny slideshow of wedding social media fails and explain that you don’t want these to happen at your wedding. It’ll give your guests a laugh and be something that sticks in the back of their head when they go to try and post a photo of you on their Instagram as you’re walking down the aisle.

2. Ask Them Early On
Put a note in the invitation so that your guests know ahead of time that you’re having a social media free wedding. That way, they won’t be shocked or surprised on the day of.

3. Give Them an Incentive to Be Phone Free
Let them know all the cool things at your wedding they can do when they aren’t wasting time scrolling through Facebook during the reception. Maybe you’re having a French Fry bar or a photo booth – let them know.

4. Let Them Post One Photo
If you don’t want to go totally social media free, you can let guests post a photo if you want and let them know it’s okay to do that during the reception only.

5. Pin Up a Sign When They Walk In
A small sign placed right before they walk into the ceremony is an easy and efficient way to spread the message before the wedding kicks off.

6. Have the Officiant Give a Reminder
Before you walk down the aisle, ask the person officiating your ceremony to make an over-arching comment about refraining from posting on social media during the ceremony.
